Laser hair removal has been around since 1997, when it was discovered that patients undergoing laser treatment for tattoos, port wine stains, pigmented lesions etc, had stunted or no hair growth in the treated area.
Ruby lasers (694nm) were the first laser to be used for serious commercial hair removal. Unfortunately this device has some major drawbacks in that it can only really be used on skin type I-II (on the Fitzpatrick scale) due to high melanin absorption
Since those early days there has been all kinds of light based devices put on the market that claim to give permanent hair reduction, from different types of laser to IPL’s.
However we believe that over 10 years later it is generally accepted around the world that there are two systems that can offer consistent results for hair removal and they are long pulsed Alexandrite (755nm) and long pulsed Nd:Yag (1064nm) lasers.
Alexandrite lasers (755nm) are mainly used for hair removal on skin types I-III, there can be a significant risk of either hyper pigmentation or the more serious hypo pigmentation if an Alexandrite is used on skin type higher than III.
Nd:Yag lasers (1064nm) can be a far more versatile tool as they can be used for hair removal on all skin types I-VI, as well as the treatment of unwanted red and blue veins on both the leg and face.

One of the many advantages of using Laser light at 1064nm is that melanin absorption is very low. As a result the risk of skin pigmentation damage, either hyper or hypo, is very low, making long pulsed Nd:Yag lasers the only choice for hair removal on skin types III-VI.

Abstract
Background
Unwanted hair growth is a common aesthetic problem. Laser hair removal has emerged as a leading treatment option for long-term depilation.
Objectives
To extensively review the literature on laser hair removal pertaining to its theoretical basis, current laser and light-based devices, and their complications. Special treatment recommendations for darker skin types were considered.
Materials and Methods
A comprehensive literature search related to the long-pulse alexandrite (755 nm), long-pulse diode (810 nm), long-pulse neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG; 1,064 nm), and intense pulsed light (IPL) system, as well as newer home-use devices, was conducted.
Results
The literature supports the use of the alexandrite, diode, Nd:YAG and IPL devices for long-term hair removal. Because of its longer wavelength, the Nd:YAG is the best laser system to use for pigmented skin. Further research is needed regarding the safety and efficacy of home-use devices.
Conclusion
Current in-office laser hair removal devices effectively provide a durable solution for unwanted hair removal.

One of my top, top favourites on skin of colour Aesthetics is the amazing Dr V. If you don’t currently follow on social or youtube i’d highly recommend a follow. In this video Dr V beautifully outline what you should be asking prior to treatment, laser hair removal pre-treatment and anticipated results post-laser hair removal treatment.
Her go to is the NdYag, although as it’s a US site she opts for the Soprano for it’s cooling effects. We agree that cooling and the long wave length medical grade Polaris system we use here is the only real option for skin of colour.

The only downside about Polaris is their website for some reason after 6 years and 1.5 million laser bursts – still doesn’t list us hahaha. Because results are important – this system is the one we choose all those years ago after 6 months research.
